Remembering HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT - 13th October 1915

Postby Westmorland » Tue Sep 29, 2015 2:47 pm

The battle of Loos started on the 25th of September 1915 and continued through to 4th of November that year. during which period sixty thousand soldiers lost their lives. On 13th of October 1915, in the space of a mere 10 minutes, the greatest loss of life was suffered by the men of the Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiments, when 3,763 men were killed and over 7,000 were wounded in the fight for HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT. As we approach the 100th anniversary of that fateful day, several organisations across the midlands are preparing to remember those who lost their lives at that particular WW I battle. Cities, towns and villages across the region are being asked to join together in a synchronized service of remembrance.

The Royal British Legion branches in Edwinstowe and in Warsop will be holding a short service at their respective village war memorials. This will take the form of a whistle being blown at 1pm (2pm in Loos, France) on 13th October 2015, followed by a 2 minute silence and the laying of a wreath. From locally held records it is not possible to determine the exact identity of local soldiers who were engaged in this battle. However, it is entirely likely that there will have been soldiers from this area who were killed or injured during that campaign. Readers are invited to join with local RBL members and participate with us in this act of remembrance.
