Warsop Christmas Market 2012

Postby Caz » Tue Oct 09, 2012 6:11 pm

Do people think we should have a Christmas Market this year? A serious question and I need to know that it's worth bothering with.

I had it in my head that I wasn't going to organise a Christmas event this year, due to the red tape and legislation, particularly the £75 trading licence imposed on stall holders. Last year, people refused to pay it and we had very few stalls, so I felt a market would be useless without stalls. Of course it's not just about market stalls, it's about a community event that we can all enjoy and we haven't had a carnival this year so a communtiy get-together is perhaps long overdue. I've had a lot of people asking about it and a lot of disappointed reactions to my answer, so I've agreed to have a meeting with Mansfield District Council to see if we can relax some of the regulations and make a 2012 Christmas Market possible.

If this event does go ahead, it will be down to PC Wayne Bennett's powers of persuasion over me and his offer to use those same powers to cut through some red tape. :D

Re: Warsop Christmas Market 2012 - 6th December

Postby Caz » Sun Oct 28, 2012 7:51 pm

The meeting went very well and I really should thank PC Wayne Bennett for dragging me, kicking and screaming, to the meeting and roping me in to organising the event again! :D Wayne was keen to see the community spirit of Warsop flow once again, especially as we didn't have a carnival this year - I think he's just a big softie who loves Christmas really. :D

Remember the discussion we had last year about the Ancient Warsop Market Charters? http://forum.warsopweb.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6074 The best news ever is that following the meeting, MDC licensing managed to get details of the Warsop Market Charters that are held at the Nottingham Archive Office and they've agreed that as we have our own charters, stallholders don't need to pay for a £75 trading licence. I'm grateful to Sam and Kate from MDC, for the effort they put in and the support they've given in this matter, because if the licence fee had been imposed, there would not have been an event.

So, the event will go ahead and will be on 6th December 2012!

If anyone would like a stall, please download a booking form from http://www.warsopweb.co.uk/christmas/index.htm I hope everyone supports this event as well as they have in previous years and if you have any suggestions, or want to volunteer your help, please contact me. carol.hill@btinternet.com

Actually Gaz, I think all those on the forum who discussed the market charter last year should give themselves a pat on the back. Because I only had a hunch about the charters and it was only the positive responses that made me look into it further, as you'll see from that discussion. It's issues like this that really make a community forum worthwhile and show just what community spirit really is. Well done to all indeed!! :D

Yep, all's going well. Had another meeting on Tuesday and I'm really pleased to say everyone is being so positive about this event that it can't fail to be a success! Ooops, I've ordered snow machines - last time I did that, we got real snow and far too much of it for the event to go ahead. The weather's the only thing I can't guarantee though.

Skating rink on Sherwood St, stalls, Santa's grotto, rides, late night opening and I'm hoping to get some carol singers on the stage and some song sheets printed so we can singalong. Fireworks - we've had a few blips like there being a crop of sugar beet in the field on Ridgeway where the fireworks go, but I have a plan and I think all's well. Christmas trees are ordered. Other things are ongoing but I don't foresee any problems - best not speak too soon though.

I need people who want to run stalls to come forward now and make all the shouting worthwhile.

There are still pitches and stalls available for booking. If you have a business within the Parish of Warsop but outside of the event area and would like to have a stall, there is no charge but you must complete a booking form so I can add you to the street plan. Contact me for more information. carol.hill@btinternet.com

We have a nice mix of stalls, a few more than last year and this is something I'd like to build up more. Our local shops will be staying open for the event and offering some Christmas cheer!

Ice skating rink on Sherwood St. It will be for under 5's only from 4pm till 4.30pm, then it's free for all! Yes, it's FREE for all! I've also ordered snow for that area, but I'm hoping I haven't overdone it again this year.

Carol singing by the stage at 5.30pm.

An aerial fireworks display at 6.30pm, which is best viewed around the Spencer's/Mills area.

New for this year we have - Thomas the Tank Engine land train - the train station is at the top of High Street and will take passengers along High Street down to the traffic lights and back up.

Santa will be arriving on Thomas the Tank Engine at 4pm and will be in his Grotto at the top of High Street to give away selection boxes to all the small children who visit him.

There are also a sundry of children's rides.
