Ivan the road sweeper

Postby optikn3rv » Tue Aug 23, 2011 2:10 pm

back again, sorry not been about much.
Anyone remember the little guy who used to walk around with his bin trolly keeping Warsop clean? We called him Ivan but don't know his name.
All I remember was he used to take a lot of stick from us kids. Thinking back we were cruel.

I think the chap you are on about was Donny.
Ivan Radcliffe (or Ratcliffe) was the chap who went to the local football matches, and always asked who the "teckerterry" (secretary) was !

I remember Ivan, he was from Church Warsop. A little skinny bloke with a squeeky voice, who was very friendly and would speak to anyone, but then everyone knew him.

When you said he was the street cleaner, I could have agreed, but then I read Wizard post and I think he's right (he's got a better memory than me). As he say's, the man with the brush and trolley was Donny and he did get teased a lot by the kids. He once whacked me around the ear with his brush because some other kids had been taunting him. I think he could have been dangerous if pushed.

See old age does effect memory lol, I remember both now they're mentioned. I always though the road sweeper was called Ivan lol. And yep he swung a mean brush.

I remember the street cleaner. I'm not surewhat his name was/ He always used to start off from the council depot on Oakfield Lane. Saw him many times because that's where I used to live. He had a double ended cart.

On a similar vein there was another guy up at the council depot on Oakfield Lane who I think was in charge of recycling cardboard who I think was stone deaf. No idea about his name but I think he lived in the Longden Terrace area.

Hi guys, Donny was indeed the roadsweeper, and became quiet a legend in this area of work. Ivan, was indeed the guy from Church Warsop. A ever regular at all school football matches on The Carrs. He used to always be around Burns Lane school, waiting for us to come out, then follow us down to The Carrs. Not only did he risk the wrath of Derek Brewin, by always calling him a 'Liar', he almost singlehandedly, promoted countless Biege Duffle Coats, on the touchline. Can remember as a kid, wondering at these coats, that had pegs, not buttons. Ivan was also an regular at Church Warsop Bethel, never missed a Sunday School. Dale Norris.

Ah yes. I remember that was Ivan's favourite phrase. 'You're a liar' or 'you're telling lies'!

Ivan used to spend alot of time in Woodheads Store. I think he had learning difficulties, but was harmless, although if you tried to run away from him he could run quite fast to catch you up. I think he died a few years back

If my memory serves me right, I think Freddie Woodhead, gave him his 'Trademark' duffle coat. He spent a lot of time there, Fred thought a lot of him.
