The Sinking of Welbeck Colliery

Postby Maidmarion » Thu Aug 19, 2010 8:21 pm

This photo was taken during the sinking of Welbeck in 1914
I only know 2 of the men standing there:

My grandfather Ted Marriott - standing 5th from the left (in front of the tub)
?? Cullington - standing first on left.

Any other names would be appreciated.

MM There's a similar photograph in the book "The Nottinghamshire Coalfield 1881-1891" by Alan Griffin. You might have seen it.
I'm not sure if your Grandfather is on it. Griffin doesn't name any of the men.

Thanks for your replies, I have now been given more names:
Left to Right:
Charlie Robinson, 'Scan' Travis, Bill Travis, ? Dickinson, Ted Marriott -
Standing in the Skip : 'Pincher' Mills
?? Wheatley, ?? , Charlie Bell, ?? Cullington

An original photo of this scene is in my fathers possession - I will try and find the book written by Dr.Griffin.

Hopefully someone may see a member of their family in the scene...

I have several copies of Griffin's book (all new) if anyone would like one for a nominal figure :)

Hi there. Could someone please repost up this picture? I believe my grandad was involved with the sinking of the pit (although I have been given the year 1912 so if someone could confirm the month and year that would be great!).

Cheers!

Check out the warsopweb gallery. You'll find some good pictures of the sinkers on there. :)
