Please be aware!

If you receive a phone call from someone saying your council tax has gone down and the caller needs your bank details to reimburse the overpayment. Do NOT give your bank details!

MDC have issued this warning as they have received a report from a Warsop resident who was targetted. MDC will not telephone anyone about council tax and they will NOT ask for bank details over the phone.

Here's the press release that MDC issued today.

26 March 2010 RS PR843

Residents warned to beware Council Tax scam

Mansfield District Council is warning residents to be on their guard against fraudsters using a Council Tax scam to get hold of personal bank account details.

The Council was recently contacted by a Warsop man who received a phone call telling him that his Council Tax band had been reduced and that he was entitled to a refund. The caller told him the refund would be paid through his bank account and so he needed to provide his bank details to claim it.

Fortunately the resident knew that his property was valued in Band A, the lowest band, and so it was impossible for him to have a reduction. He refused to provide details and the caller hung-up when he was challenged. The resident informed Mansfield District Council immediately.

There are just over 47,000 domestic properties in the Mansfield district. Approximately 56% are in Band A and so would not qualify for a refund due to the charging band reducing.

Ian Kirk, Revenues and Benefits Manager at Mansfield District Council said: “The Council would never contact residents by phone in this way to ask for bank details. If there were to be a change to Council Tax, a new bill would be issued and a refund, if applicable, automatically made by cheque.

“We urge residents to be on their guard to this scam and never disclose bank details to anyone saying they are from the Council because the caller won’t have any connection with us.

“Likewise, we would never issue emails giving refund information or asking for account details in this way.”

If you think you have been the victim of a similar scam or attempted scam, you can report it to Mansfield District Council by calling 01623 463463 or Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 999.
