I thought I'd read something about it recently but I've looked and can't find anything, so maybe not. I may be thinking of the Eastwood building behind the Health Centre but I think you're asking about the site that Tesco were going to build on.

Demolition notices have gone up on the building today, including warnings of asbestos removal.

It will certainly look different without the Eastwoods building there. Anyone got any photos of it before it goes?

Yes, Cas, I took a load of photos back in April 2010 when the Tesco development was first announced; here's a couple of them:

Thanks Mike. Looking at those photos, I was remembering when the Empress Hall stood on the spot where the Eastwood car park now is. I also noticed the hill in the background is green - pre solar farm!

It looks like the site will soon be completely cleared; all the outbuildings in the back yard have gone, and the main factory is now gutted:

Has there been any planning application for redevelopment, or is the site clearance just to make the plot more attractive to developers?

It will certainly look strange without those buildings there.

it will be a lot better once it has been demolished and will give prospective buyers a good idea of the space there is available and also prevent it being vandalized .

Maybe a site for flats or some sort of sheltered accommodation :D
Screw the padded room, give me a trampoline floor with bubble wrapped walls and a velcro ceiling.

Yes, I agree Adrian, it will look better and removes the risk of vandalism. I don't know if there has been any interest in the site but it will make a good plot of building land.

What about a real market instead of the pathetic excuse for a market we have at present?

it would make a good site for a new swimming pool and sports centre and it doesn't have to a public funded one either, it could be built and funded by a private company

It would be a good site for any number of things but someone has to buy the land and then develop it in the best way for them to make money.
