Olympic Security

Postby tightwadswife » Fri Jul 13, 2012 7:54 am

Why are we so surprised that G4S - not renown for competence - has failed to recruit enough suitable security guards to 'protect' the Olympic site?
I understand the majority of their recruits have been unemployed teenagers. Personally I wouldn't like to think my safety was in the hands of some half trained youth.
So, somewhat controversially it seems, we're going to be using the army instead. Why weren't we using the armed forces in the first place?
Aren't the armed forces supposed to be there for our protection anyway?

The vast amount of money that's being given to this private company could have been given to the armed forces, who would have done a superb job and there would be no need for the latest round of redundancies. I wonder which ministers have their fingers in the pie at G4S?.........

So they are short of staff !

"At the end of 2010 over 625,000 people were employed by G4S. This has increased from 600,000 at the end of 2009."

But the UK and Ireland = 46,200 staff.

So maybe a little overtime would be a good idea to sort out the problems.

All from the annual report http://reports.g4s.com/csr/securing-our ... oyees.html

I see that it of 56 security saff scheduled to start work protecting a team in Manchester over the weekend only 17 turned up for work, Greater Manchester Police had to make the numbers up with their officers.

At least Teresa May is correct in saying that the security of the Olympics is not compromised, it's just the rest of the country because all our police officers are clearing up the G4S mess. I can see a 2 week crime wave hitting England in 11 days time!

With Police cutbacks and army cutbacks we soon won't be able to rely on them anymore either to cover, when these companies make a cock up of things.

I think it should be noted that the original number was apparently 2000 personnel that G4s were told they needed then SIX months ago they were told another EIGHT THOUSAND would be needed. failings on more than just g4s in my opinion. although on radio was an ex copper that signed a contract then heard nothing else months ago!!!

I totally agree that G4S are presiding over a real shambles, but one thing I thought about was these unemployed folk who have accepted jobs and then not turned up. Are their benefits going to be stopped for the 3-4 weeks of work that they should have been paid for and got some benefit from?
