Adrian, you put above on while i was typing answer out, else i would have replied before answer.
What i forgot to mention was that the country Khartoum is in, is Sudan (east of Chad).
And as for sozzled, you could say he was out of his head, because the British army found his head stuck on a pole outside the city gates :roll:

Another fact relating to the puzzle then Caz:- the last big tributary flows into the nile at approx halfway along it's length and then the river flows mainly through desert with no other major source of top up, therfore it evaporates and gets smaller as it makes it way to the sea, unlike most rivers that get bigger.

I saw black swan upon a river, and at first I thought I was in Scotland, but the Indian to my west soon told me were I was?

Reckon I know it, is it somewhere in the Southern hemisphere? I've heard of a Black Swan lager/beer in the Antipodes.

Explain your clues then Lafi. I can see the Scottish connection with Perth but what's the black swan bit mean?
