one is a straight pathway and one is a diagonal pathway

Both are straight (horizontal) pathways ... there are no diagonals (which would also be straight incidently) or curved pathways.

Porthos has figured it.

Well both Porthos and now Caz have correctly identified that he was travelling on a moving conveyer (travellator) ... like you get at Manchester airport.

He walked 49.5 metres then stepped onto the conver belt ... his last step took him off the conveyer belt and he'd reached the end.
